Swimming Pool Designs for Maximum Fun and Enjoyment

The first thing you need to consider when designing your pool is its intended use. Do you want to swim laps, do physical therapy, exercise, entertain guests, let the kids have some fun, or impress your neighbors? After all, you want to get a pool for a reason or a multitude of reasons to enhance your life. A pool‘s intended use has arguably the greatest impact on the way it should be designed, and therefore, the needs and wants your swimming pool is intended to fulfill should be identified very early in the design process. It is also useful to recognize the pool‘s primary functions to help you narrow down your design choices. In the following sections we’ll go over some of the most popular benefits people get from owning a pool, and how these impact the swimming pool‘s design.

Fun and Leisure:

The most frequent motive for obtaining a swimming pool is for family fun and leisure. A backyard pool is a great place to cool off during the summer, have fun with the kids and throw some inflatable toys around. If this is your only reason for wanting a pool, then the simplest, least expensive swimming pool designs will suffice. If your budget is large, then you may want to invest in some luxury, but otherwise an above-ground pool or a shallow in-ground pool would be enough to meet your needs. A pool that’s at a constant depth of 4 feet is sufficiently deep to splash around and swim the occasional lap in, but also shallow enough to provide safety for the whole family.

Exercise:

If you want to use your pool for some serious exercise, then the dimensions of your pool require more critical consideration. For lap swimming, a pool at least 25 feet long and 3.5 feet deep is recommended, with typical lengths ranging form 25 to 40 feet. There are also dedicated lap pools that are relatively very narrow, and therefore fit in constrained spaces. Water aerobics require some more depth to avoid touching bottom. Typically a section of the pool that’s 5 to 6 feet deep is enough for this purpose.

Another option for swimmers is the swim spa, which is a small pool, usually no more than about 12 feet in length that can generate a strong current to swim against. One can then swim against the current while remaining in place. Their small size also makes the installation of indoor swim spas a very viable option in many cases.

Parties and Entertaining Guests:

If pool parties are in your future you may have a few other design issues to think about. These largely involve the landscaping and design of the area surrounding the pool. You may want to surround the pool with a patio or a deck, add a pool house, a gazebo, an outdoor bar, furniture, etc. In addition, you may want the pool itself to be designed for looks, with a stylish shape, rather than just for functionality. Carefully hiding pool equipment will also make the pool area more appealing.

Relaxation:

Spending time at your pool can be very relaxing, and the proper amenities will make it even more enjoyable. An addition of a spa or a hot tub to the pool area is a great complement to the swimming pool itself. Like pools, these come in the in-ground, and portable, above-ground varieties. An in-ground spa is typically connected to the pool‘s filtration and heating systems. And if that’s not the case, a portable spa is a much more economical option.

If you’re going to spend time pool-side sunbathing, be sure to leave the space for it. And if you opt for the above-ground pool variety, the addition of a sizable pool level deck makes great sense.

Overview of Swimming Pool Filter Pumps

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Any swimming pool setup requires a pump for filtering and heating. It is important to make the correct choice when purchasing a pool pump, and you might not be pleased with your purchase if you don’t first do your homework.

A swimming pool pump is responsible for circulating water through heating and filtering unites with efficiency and at the lowest energy costs as possible. The right pump for your size and type of pool will achieve this.

Pool maintenance is more involved than assembling parts to pump water at the correct flow rate. Other factors come into consideration in order to achieve a system optimized for power usage and quick circulation.

Before you purchase a new pool pump, try to keep the following in mind. Make sure the pump you buy as capable designed to operate efficiently with your size swimming pool. Follow that one simple rule and you can’t go wrong.

The right pool pump for the job

Even the most efficient pool pump can use up a lot of power, on the scale of household air conditioning. At an average of about 3/4 horsepower, a swimming pool pump represents a significant power consuming device. The best strategy is to use one that is most efficient for your pool size.

The first step is to ensure the pumps capacity is a match for your pool volume. It might be tempting to buy a larger pump than is needed. This usually results in only in higher electrical bill without any benefit to pumping efficiency. A better strategy is to use a pump that optimize the power and duration in order to circulate the water in as short amount of time and with as little power as needed.

Pump functionality

In addition to the correct horsepower, an efficient pump for your pool will have efficiency ensuring functionality – regulator and timer functions are highly desirable for achieving maximum efficiency.

Brand names:

A couple of brand names come to the fore front when it comes to pull pumps. Most notably, names like Hayward and Intex have developed state of the art technology in every system they make. Both of these companies have pumping systems for your pool type and size. You can consult with these companies directly or with your local dealer to pick out the right pump for your pool.

Hayward Pool Supply

Hayward is a best of breed when it comes to swimming pool pumps. Each pump purchased from a Hayward dealer comes with over 80 years experience in swimming pool pumps.

Established in the 1920s, Hayward Pool Supply provides the industries top pool equipment to this day. Filters, heat pumps, or any other circulation related items can be purchased from Hayward for Hayward products, so you know every item is designed as part of a systematic approach.

Intex Pool Supplies

The Intex Recreational Corp. has been in the business of swimming pool recreation supplies for over 40 years. Anything having to do with water fun and sports can be had through Intex.

Intex makes terrific inflatable pool products, swimming gear, water toys, floating mats, and other fun accessories. In addition, they are well known for superior quality swimming pool pumps and sport a large array of pumps for every need your pool may have.

In conclusion

The first step to swimming pool pump efficiency is to match the pump with the pool needs. Next is to setup the timer, regulator or other efficiency features to achieve the lowest possible power consumption while still getting the job done.

Baby Swimming Lessons

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Growing Accustomed to the Water at a Young Age

Humans are the only mammals that lack the instinctive ability to swim. This is why is it very important to introduce swimming at a very young age with baby swimming lessons, so that children grow up learning how to swim. This is beneficial from a safety standpoint in addition to enjoyment and fitness purposes.

Before enrolling any youngster in baby swimming lessons, the child should be as accustomed to the water as possible. One way to prepare children for baby swimming lessons is at home in the bathtub by pouring small amounts of warm, non soapy water over the child’s head so that it trickles down the face. Incorporating toys into bath time also helps build position associations with being in the water that can transfer over to the swimming pool.

Starting ‘em Young

The best time to start a child in baby swimming lessons is between six and twelve months old, because the water still has some of the natural associations of being in the womb. Some mothers choose to start baby swimming lessons as early as twelve weeks while others wait until their babies are about 18 months old. After this time, it can be more difficult for a child to learn water adjustment and breath control.

While swim diapers aren’t required in all swimming pools, they are a good idea for baby swimming lessons to avoid any accidents in the water. Babies over the age of one may also benefit from water wings to help stay afloat.

Before starting baby swimming lessons, visit the pool during non-peak hours a couple of times to allow the baby a chance to get accustomed to the water. Some pools hold weekly “parent and baby” swimming sessions reserved specifically for this purpose. Always maintain eye contact when first entering the water, and hold the baby close to make them feel relaxed and confident. As their confidence increases, move the baby around slowly in the water to ease them into the feeling of swimming.

Toys, Songs, and Bubbles

Here are some other great tips for making the pool a fun and enjoyable experience for babies. Try bringing some of the baby’s bath toys to the pool to demonstrate that the water is essentially the same. Once the baby has a feel for the pool, toss one of the toys a few feet and hold them as they glide through the water to retrieve it. Or, try laying the baby down on their back and holding them up while they their legs.

Some parents like to sing songs like “Humpty Dumpty” while the baby sits on the edge of the pool. When the song comes to the line “Humpty Dumpty had a great fall”, lift the baby up and down into the water with a big splash!

Once they become accustomed to the feeling of having water on their face, children love to learn how to blow bubbles. Blowing bubbles is a great first step in learning how to swim since it is impossible to inhale water while bubbles are being blown.

How to Make a Swimming Technique Video

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Of all the elements of triathlon, swimming is the most skill-based sport. We’ve found that an inefficient swim stroke will hurt your progress even more than inefficient cycling or running. And no matter how good your fitness is, if you can’t swim efficiently, no amount of extra muscles or lungs will help you in the water.

But unless you have someone standing on the edge of the pool watching you and giving you feedback, it can be very difficult to know exactly what your arms, leg, head and torso are doing while you swim. This is why a swimming technique video is a crucial element of improving as a triathlete.

For a swimming technique video, you don’t necessarily have to have a fancy underwater swimming camera or a professional film crew. All you need is a friend, fellow athlete or family member to hold a camera, and follow the simple swimming technique video instructions in this article.

Swimming Technique Video Step 1: Have a camera. As mentioned, you don’t have to have an underwater camera, but with so many inexpensive underwater video cameras available today, it’s time to consider adding one to your bag of training equipment. Here’s a short list of some of affordable underwater video solutions that also work very well above the water:

-Casio Exilim EX-G1 12.1 MP Slim-line Endurance Digital Camera

-Flip Video AWC2T Underwater Case for UltraHD and Ultra 2nd Generation camcorders

-Flip UltraHD Camcorder, 120 Minutes – Purchase with the case above, or purchase a waterproof bag to put the camera in

-Pentax Optio WS80 10MP Waterproof Digital Camera

-Olympus Stylus Tough-8000 12 MP Digital Camera

Swimming Technique Video Step 2: Film front overwater footage. You need to swim 25m in a straight direction away from camera while being videotaped. Preferably, have the videographer stop filming at this point, then start filming again as you turn and swim 25m in a straight direction toward the camera while being videotaped.

Swimming Technique Video Step 3: Film side overwater footage. Swim 25 meters while the person beside the camera walks beside you or, if angle is wide enough, simply pans the camera. The person holding the camera should ensure that the video includes a front diagonal angle, a direct side angle, and a rear diagonal angle. This is best accomplished by starting 5-10 meters in front of the swimmer, filming the swimmer until they are parallel to the camera, walking directly beside the swimmer for 5-10 meters, then stopping and filming the swimmer as they pass.

Swimming Technique Video Step 4 (optional): Collect underwater front analysis video. For the underwater front analysis, the swimmer should start halfway down the pool, and then swim directly at the camera, which is held stationary at one end of the pool.

Swimming Technique Video Step 5 (optional): For the side analysis, the video collector needs to be one to two lanes away from the swimmer, and in the center of the pool. Get as wide a pan angle as possible of the swimmer completing a full lap, (so you can see both right and left side views).

Once you’ve collected the video, the next step is to grab a bowl of popcorn, sit down in front of the TV (or just keep hanging out by the pool) and view your swimming technique video. From head to toe, watch your breathing patterns, your hand angle entry, your arm movement, your elbow bend, your torso angle, your hip movement, your knee bend, your ankle angle, and every aspect you can see. You’ll find that there are definitely certain elements that can be specifically inspected in front overwater, side overwater, front underwater, and side underwater.

At the Rock Star Triathlete Academy, we now use advanced online software to allow you to upload your video to us, then have your academy coaches actually analyze the video using voice-overs and angle drawings. This is a quick way to get professional feedback, inexpensively. To learn more, simply visit: http://www.rockstartriathlete.com.

Is Swimming For You?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Being a couch potato for nearly a lifetime ended recently with the realization that health both mental and physical was being compromised by lack of exercise. There was no reason not to take up some sort of exercise regime but finding something that suited would be a problem. In younger days, swimming enjoyment was part of life, but family commitments and an ever-increasing waistline spelled doom to swimming. The shear embarrassment of wearing swimming attire was too great!

The decision made to go and check out the local swimming pool became the focus and first step to take. It had been over 40 years since stepping in to the complex, memories somewhat faded as to its facilities. The pool looked beautiful and inviting but ethnicity had changed in the intervening years. The mix was now mostly other races from all round the world and none of European descent. This could be a hindrance, as I did not fit the demographics and the feeling of definitely being the odd one out allowed me to understand how those of other races must feel when joining our society.

Facing the situation was not easy, but the next day saw the pool with a new customer. The big pool, warm to the big toe was a little chilly to the rest of the body, but after the initial gasp, it became warmer after a few minutes. I was swimming again! However, 10 minutes later exhaustion set in so it was just a case of watching everyone else enjoying him or herself. Then discovery of the pleasures of the spa had me hooked. From then on, it became a daily cause of motivation and pleasure.

As the days turned into months and years, the ability to achieve more and more became evident. Muscles became stronger, mental outlook had each day becoming worth getting out of bed for. The friendship of people at the pool enjoyable and providing an insight into other cultures. Swimming or pool walking provides an excellent exercise base to gently improve the body and health of an individual. It causes little strain on joints that have worn over the years, even aiding recovery from joint surgery.

The key is doing the exercise regularly as in most pursuits, because that is where the improvement comes from and everything else follows. Having altered the eating habits of a lifetime as well, I find there is a much healthier, slimmer and fitter body. Swimming and pool walking are the greatest!

Swimming Pool Toys and Activities Equals Summer Fun

Image : http://www.flickr.com

With the summer months comes boredom for many young children. Children exit school, and enter into the summer with high expectations. Rather than having these children turn to the television set, have them turn to many educational and fun pool toys or activities. Swimming is a great exercise for young children, and there are many toys available that can teach or aid young children in the water, and out.

When teaching a young child how to swim, there are many toys available that can help aid you in teaching them. Some toys, including floats, can be fun for the child and easier for you to show them to swim. There are also many toys, such as dive rings, than can reinforce and strengthen their swimming technique.

In addition to educational pool toys, there are plenty of toys available that are just plain fun, for children and adults. New games are always being developed for the pool, such as a new game called Leap Frog, or Underwater Boomerangs. These toys are fun, and have many opportunities for children, offering plenty of fun game ideas. What better way to get involved with your children during the hot summer months than playing a fun game in the pool. The possibilities for games are endless and can be as simple as a fun game of volleyball in the water, to more advanced adventure games using the dive rings. Dive rings are one of the best pool toys around, and are available in many different options, including glow in the dark!

Pool fun doesn’t have to just end when the sun goes down. Many fun games are available for night time play as many toy companies are now creating pool toys that glow in the dark. Keep your children happy by playing a racing game using some fun glow in the dark pool toys, or take the fun in and out of the water by hiding toys in the water and out!

Have your child use their imagination by combining toys to create new game options. Help edge your child in the direction of creativity by adding in some of your own ideas. This is a great way to keep your child stimulated and entertained, but also reinforces family time. Bring out the whole family to play a new and original game made up by your children.

When school ends for the summer, the first people kids turn to are their parents for fun. Make sure they are stimulated and don’t turn to the television for fun. Create games, improvise toys, and keep your children healthy with fun pool activities. Family time during the summer months will keep your child happy, entertained, and builds a stronger bond between family members. Who knows, during these hot summer months, parents may end up having a blast as well, and build many fond memories that children will carry for the rest of their life.

Denise Sanger is the owner of NewCoolToysOnline.com which carries a great selection of pool toys and bath tub toys. She also owns USAPoolToy.com which is a wholesale distributor of toys and gifts. The company may be reached at 877/950-7665.

Swimming Pool in Your Garden – Posh Feature Or Home For Frogs

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Outdoor, or as Americans call it above-ground, swimming pool is such a delight during the hot summer months. There is noting like starting the day with an early morning swim, or dipping in at the end of the day with a cool drink in your hand. Kids can spend hours of pure fun splashing around, and you will see more of them, since the pool beats visit to the mall hands down.

But, you cannot just stick your outdoor swimming pool in the middle of the yard and be done with it. You had to sacrifice a great portion of your flower garden for it, so you need to find a way to make the pool an attractive feature, and not just a large bucket of water.

Location

Sloping land can allow you to cut away a space for the pool and tuck it in between the rhododendron bushes or small lilac trees.

On a flat piece of land, plan on building a wooden deck around, on several levels, to make your outdoor swimming pool part of the entertainment area of the garden. Add a barbeque and a dining table, and a few lounge chairs, and you will have the upscale look with the reasonable price of the outdoor above-ground pool.

The size

Outdoor swimming pools now come in all sizes and shapes and they can be big enough to swim in. But, this means much more water and high water bills during the summer months. It will also mean more chemicals to keep the pool clean. If you are buying the pool just for the kids, they do not need large pool to have fun in. Smaller pools are also slightly less risky for kids if they are ever left alone in it. This should be avoided at all costs.

The design

Outdoor pools come in several forms:

Fast-set outdoor swimming pools come in one piece and their installation does not require any tools. They come in several sizes.Rigid outdoor swimming pools are made of a heavy-duty PVC and do not need air to be installed.

Steel frame outdoor swimming pools consist of the rigid rust-resistant galvanized steel and a coating of the 3-ply heavy duty PVC plastic and polyester.

Inflatable outdoor swimming pools are becoming hugely popular because of their ease of installation and the large size they can be made. They are constructed of the tested vinyl made in one, two or three chambers. The depth of the pool depends on the number of chambers (rings) used.

Outdoor pools are great option for most people who do not or cannot invest large amounts of money for the inground pools. The new technologies and materials are allowing manufacturers to create better and bigger pools all the time, all within the reasonable price and extreme ease of installation.

For the range of outdoor swimming pools, available colors and shapes, consult Outdoorswimmingpools.co.uk.

How to Go About Buying a Swimming Pool Cover

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you own a swimming pool, a swimming pool cover is an accessory that you simply can’t afford not to buy. As a result, this article is going to describe the 2 purposes a cover serves, as well as provide a few tips in an attempt to save you money when you do buy one.

Very simply, a pool cover will provide you with peace of mind. This is because a cover can be a very effective barrier against a child entering the pool while unsupervised. Even though we always try to watch our children around the pool, there are numerous incidents of small children drowning each year while they were unsupervised.

The second purpose of a pool cover is to keep leaves and other debris from entering your pool. A cover, if used properly, will dramatically reduce the amount of cleaning that you will have to do.

Now that we have convinced you to buy a pool cover, how do you go about doing so? Let’s provide a few tips.

First, we recommend that you buy your swimming pool accessories from a reputable online seller. While brick and mortar pool stores have various products, an online vendor will usually have a much bigger selection of choices. As a note of caution, you should make sure you are buying from a reputable vendor (to help, you can always check with the Better Business Bureau).

Second, to get the best price on your cover, you should search for coupons from the vendor you are considering buying from. You will be very surprised how often you will find coupons (usually in the form of no shipping charge).

Third, you should already have measured your pool‘s dimensions to ensure you are getting the right sized cover. Whatever you do, make sure you do not get a pool cover that is too small. It is always better to get a cover that is too large than one that is too small.

Next, you should decide what type of cover you want. Do you want a solar pool cover, a winter pool cover, a mesh cover, or a vinyl cover? These are questions you should consider before adding an item to your online shopping cart.

Lastly, as with anything you buy online, you should comparison shop between websites. If you follow this step alone, you can save a boatload of money.

If you follow these four tips, we are sure that you will be able to get the best pool cover at the best price. So, what are you waiting for? Start your search today.

For further information on swimming pool matters, we recommend you visit the Swimming Pool Resource Center and the Swimming Pool Financing Guide.

Do Body Suits Help Reduce Drag While Swimming?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When we swim there are forces that are out of our control that we must contend with in the hopes of swimming faster. It doesn’t matter if you are in the pool or the open water, we must deal with these forces. The drag that is created by the water on our bodies is one of the main obstacles we must deal with and finding a way to reduce this drag makes a difference in how fast we can swim. So, how do we reduce drag while swimming?

Being water is so much denser than air we also have to fight this resistance. When the water flows along our bodies it tries to cling to anything it can grab onto, this is drag and reducing the effect of this drag will help us slide through the water more easily. Not only is drag a problem but we also have to deal with the turbulence of the water. If swimming in a pool with others, the surface of the water gets choppy which itself can slow you down a little as you plow through the chop.

Swimmers have been trying to reduce this drag for many years. Some of the things done are shaving body hair to reduce drag. Wearing swim caps and shaving the head are also popular. New style full-body suits are now used to reduce drag. The fabric has a pattern that is supposed to crate pressure differences which in turn help you slide through the water easier.

Tests have shown that these suits give the best benefit when doing a glide such as pushing off the wall after a turn. The suit seems to loose its benefits while actively swimming because of the water surface turbulence. There is lots of information out there about the effects of drag on the body while swimming, and reducing this drag to get an edge has been something that all swimmers have been thinking about.

If you want to discover more about how to correctly swim the freestyle, be more efficient in the water and gain speed go to Master the Freestyle.
